We could only get together to celebrate my September 30th birthday (#77) in November...but it sure was worth the wait! It included a home-baked birthday cake with 78 candles blazing. I was so concerned about my sister's dining room going up in flames before I blew them all out, I didn't even take a photo! There was a Bento Box lunch at a Japanese restaurant, a Wine & Chocolate Tasting at Laurel Lake Vineyards where there was a Sportscar Meet also taking place, dinner at Grasso's with a delicious Espresso Martini, and Normandie hard cider and small plates at Jedediah Hawks' Inn before dinner, with a stop at the Briarmere Farms for raspberry pie, and a carrot cake muffin.

Now back to the 17-day diet once again!

Planned on going with Thomy on Friday, August 9th...but both of us were not feeling up to facing the crowds, even though as a member I would get priority entry. Good thing....it turned out there was a 3 hour wait on line outside (going into Central Park), followed by a 2 hour wait inside! The crush was so bad, the Museum had to give up on honoring membership priority entrance. No way we could have stood for 5 hours before even seeing the show. I ordered the book "Savage Beauty" from Amazon and I'll have to be content to seeing the pictures and viewing this video. What a beautiful fantasy in fashion!

This picture postcard view from my 14th floor window is the reason Newark Airport was closed, and my 6:30 pm flight to Brussels on Monday, December 27th, was canceled around 1:30 pm. Just a half-hour before the limo to the airport was scheduled to pick us up! American Airlines couldn't reschedule the flight out until Sunday, January 2nd, so the entire trip was canceled. Looking forward to New Year's Eve in exotic NJ, watching the Times Square Ball go down on the TV.

Yes, that is a snowdrift on my windowsill, but of course, it didn't stack up that high...just piled up by the wind.

I finally removed the red wax seal and used a manual corkscrew to remove the cork. No special absinthe glass, so I made do with a small cordial glass and diluted the 120 proof absinthe with 5 to 1 icewater, and it turned that milky white. Either I didn't drink enough, or diluted it too much. None of that "clarity" mentioned in the YouTube video, but I did fall asleep while watching an interesting Netflix DVD, "Lovely Bones." I was expecting artistic inspiration, but all I did was print out some of the photos I took on Thanksgiving. In fact, I found a digital ala Jackson Pollock I did some time ago, no Absinthe involved. What was I on that day? Probably too much sugar!

After seeing this "CHOW" video, I decided to invest in a bottle of St. George Absinthe Verte. Opening the bottle was a challenge. It comes corked, with a red wax seal. With the glass "lip" I had to use a manual corkscrew. That first whiff when I popped the cork was very nice. I didn't have a proper Absinthe glass, but I used a small wine glass, and approximately 5 oz. icewater to 1 oz. absinthe. Well, I didn't feel particularly "clear" or "creative," but I did fall asleep while watching an interesting Netflix movie. That's not quite the effect I was anticipating. Perhaps a second drink or a lesser dilution...but since this stuff is 120 proof, I'm not sure I want to try it.

I did have fun googling Absinthe paraphernalia and there are some beautiful water fountains, glasses and posters...all very expensive. I will definitely not buy any of them.

I did take photos which I'll post later. Who knows..perhaps the "Green Fairy" did encourage some creativity after all.

As I walked along the street yesterday afternoon the last of the Autumn leaves were swirling on the ground and in my face...it was quite a windy day. I picked an assorted bunch and then late that evening, had fun playing with them and the little P&S Fuji camera.

I used a pop-up of Frank Gehry's Walt Disney Concert Hall, Los Angeles, Calif., as a backdrop and perhaps I'll turn out a series using my own photos of Gehry buildings. Another thing for the "To Do" list!

Actually it's a red fox headband I got in Montreal many years ago on a trip with three NYC clothing designers! It was a most interesting experience.

I was getting out a poncho to wear tonight and this was in the bottom of the garment bag...just feeling silly. I probably should have done this for Halloween.

Now I know why people love Photoshop...and I think I'd better learn how to use it. You can wipe away a lot of wrinkles, crinkles & under-eye bags! OK...Learn Photoshop gets added to the To Do List.

Collage "Mostly Roses"

Stopped at the beautiful Rose Gardens in Portland on the whirlwind trip to Portland, Seattle and Tacoma. Although it's a little past their prime, there were many beautiful roses still in bloom. Unlike what we'd heard...it was a lovely warm and sunny day and I had about 45 minutes to literally run around taking photos.

My grandniece, Abigail, is the little girl in the red t-shirt walking down the hall in her grandmother's house. The door she opens at the end is the door to the guest room I always stay in when visiting my sister, her grandmother. Next visit do you suppose I will notice "the sweet smell of rotting flowers"???? Hope, not! My sister usually puts fresh flowers from her garden on the little nightstand next to the bed.

I've ordered the book which is scheduled to be sent out on September 27th. Based on the short story by Susan Henderson, "Motorhead," I'm looking forward to a good read.

My new techie toy....a Coby key chain digital frame that holds 60 1" photos. I though it was a fun gadget for only $9 until it took me hours trying to get it recognized by either the Toshiba or the Asus. I researched comments from other buyers and hurrah....one person said they got it to work by using a cable connection from a camera, instead of the one that came with the key chain. I thought it was some kind of a software problem, but when I used the cable from a card reader to connect the key chain to the laptop....yay...it worked!

Before I found the solution I sent an e-mail to Coby tech support. Their response should be interesting.

You can set the digital time, which shows up in nice big numbers, so I can also use it as a watch when I'm traveling.

Back To School - Then & Now

With a lot of kids going back to school after Labor Day I started to remember what it felt like back in the olden days (60 years ago....yikes!). It seems to me it was so much simpler. As a public school kid the "new school outfit" was important...maybe a snazzy pencil box and book bag (for nerds), and a strong leather strap to hold your books together (for the "cool" kids). No cell phone, ipod, head phones, calculator, netbook, or backpack; no texting and no twittering! No school bus, even living down a country road in New Jersey. I caught a ride into town on the dairy farmer's milk truck and sat in an empty elementary school classroom by myself for about an hour before the "townies" arrived at 9:00 a.m. At 3:00 p.m. I walked back the lonely country road to an empty house (my parents and Aunt were all at work; my baby sister was at a sitter's house.) Today that would be unheard of and my parents would probably be charged with neglect! The thing is...I never realized I was neglected, unhappy, or in grave danger. I just thought that was the way things were and was perfectly OK with it. In many ways, I think it prepared me for dealing with whatever life throws at you. Perhaps self-pity, the inability to cope, and blaming everyone else for your problems are things you are taught.

Of course, this is a very different world and no way could anyone leave an 8 year-old in an empty building (except for the janitor), in an empty farm house, or walking on a mostly deserted country road. In fact, some 68 years later, I wouldn't put myself in those places either. Kind of a sad statement about today's world, isn't it?

As for all that techie stuff that keeps people from looking into each other's eyes while talking....I must admit that the stuff in the collage is mine and not some grandchild's..both new and old. Of course, the ipod nano and the motorola razr cell phone are "old" by technie standards, but they work for me. Only the netbook is new and I plan to take it traveling with me, along with the DSLR camera...but I still like to look people in the eye when I am talking with them (or taking their picture). Some of the "old" has fond memories...the "slate" from a Dollar Store, the glass inkwell from a shop in India; the beautiful Murano glass pen a Christmas gift from my nieces. And if truth be told, I mostly correspond by e-mail and do very little "real" writing anymore.

These are probably the most words I've put into this blog....I've been "home alone" for a few days and since I no longer have my dogs Belle and Ariel to talk with, I've got all this conversation to get out!

P.S. I loved Richard Harris' MacArthur Park back in 1968 and practically wore out that track on the 33 1/3 Vinyl LP, so I also love the fact that I could download it from Amazon to my ipod Nano for 99 cents!

Winter Will Come Again!

When you're snapping your own photo, it's hard to smile and focus at the same time.

I am wearing my Renoir-inspired hat. I made the mistake of trying it on (just for fun) at the Philadelphia Museum's special shop in connection with the Renoir exhibit. My friends said I just had to buy it...so I did. Since it's not exactly something you throw on to go to Shop Rite, they promised we'd go to High Tea at the Plaza...I'm still waiting!

Homage to Henri (Cartier-Bresson)

I was so impressed by first, the Henri Cartier-Bresson MOMA exhibit (recently closed), and then the documentary I got from Netflix "Henri Cartier-Bresson: The Impassioned Eye." I went through my photos from everywhere, converted some to Black & White, and tried to select those that demonstrate that "click moment" in time.
